Synechdoche

Synecdoche (pronounced /sɪˈnɛkdəkiː/; from Greek synekdoche (συνεκδοχή), meaning "simultaneous understanding") is a figure of speech in which a term is used in one of the following ways:
  • Part of something is used to refer to the whole thing (pars pro toto), or
  • A thing (a "whole") is used to refer to part of it (totum pro parte), or
  • A specific class of thing is used to refer to a larger, more general class, or
  • A general class of thing is used to refer to a smaller, more specific class, or
  • A material is used to refer to an object composed of that material, or
  • A container is used to refer to its contents.
I just watched a movie by this title. it was very profound. A man who is a play director is left by his wife and child. in this he begins to develop another play about life and death. his own life becomes the play and the people that play the actors become a part of this lie by the end he becomes a character that is not him in this play. his reality collides with his art and he no longer understands what is real or not. it really made me think about if this is what we are really doing. have we become so confused with society and reality that we live our lives not really knowing who we are or what we really want. do we spend our lives trying to be what we think other people want and are we going to look back on all this with regret. the fact is this is not a a play and we only get one chance to act out this play. it really made me consider that we as humans must make the most of every moment and remember that the people in are lives are attached by stings that are attached to other peoples lives, really as human beings we are all somehow connected. the way we effect one person can effect so many. really consider the people that you effect and who they effect. if we all took the time to do this i think the world would be a much different place.
